On 12/17/08 our provisioning arrived and we moved off the dock at Penn’s Landing to Fat Hogs Bay.
The next morning we raised sail, perfect conditions and sailed to Peter Island where we dropped the anchor. We feel jubilant that this season is off to a fun sailing adventure.
12/19/08 Sailed to Nanny Cay, Tortolla for Kevin Wrigley (Quantum Sails), birthday party on the beach. Sail was smooth, with 16 kts breeze. Found that the auto pilot is not working. The depth sounder alarm goes off erratically every 2 minutes.
In light of this, we have and electronics expert aboard that explained a lengthy and costly repair. Decided to sail without repair. Outside harbor entrance we experienced 20kts with 2-3 foot seas. Sailed around Tortolla and anchored in Trellis Bay. We proceeded north the next day with wind and seas increasing. Our speed was good and we arrived in North Sound in 3 hours.
On the 22nd a local sailor and friend, sent his friend Carlos to our boat.
After assessing our electronic problem, Carlos said he would be back in 10 minutes. He replaced our auto pilot and fixed depth sounder. Total time 30 minutes. Said to pay him for his time. Unbelievable. Everything working!
We met a couple who are both retired physicians. They were flying a HUGH Menorah flag on their boat. After a big hello, they gave us Hanukkah chocolate gelt and offered us a menorah.
Neil installed a new interior cabin light. After running into a snag, called Carlos and two minutes later the installation was repaired.
On Christmas day a local native family invited us to their home for dinner. A vary real and rare treat.
On 12/26/08, the wind waves coming into the bay make staying here untenable. Winds 30 kts and gusting 35+ kts. We take a double reef in the main sail and head for smooth waters further north.
Our now friends on a 58’ power boat, watch us anchor. They then invite us aboard for Shabbat and Hanukkah dinner. It was an unbelievable traditional celebration. We ate gefilte fish, kreplach and matzo ball soup. kasha vanishkas, chicken, salad, vegetables and for desert Halvah and fruit. We danced and san and lit the candles.
Most incredible.
On 12/29/08 the mega yachts are here, including Rising Sun and a few with helicopters on the stern.
Still blowing. We raise sail, take the reef out to a full main sail and head south. On the way we stopped in Spainish Town to provision. Now we are off to a secluded anchorage away from the revelers where it is nice and quiet. We are alone with only the chirping of birds, goats on the rocks in search of food and a bounty of colorful fish in the clear waters around the boat.
Today is 12/31/08 and a good day to blow up the kayak. There is not a ripple in the water. We kayak this beautiful bay, have a nice dinner and enjoy the tranquil time. A wonderful New Year’s Eve.
